Gilchrist disappointed, lauds michael clarke's ton

Bangalore, Sep 29 (UNI) With disappointment writ large in his face over rains washing away the first ODI against India, Australian Skipper Adam Gilchrist tonight praised Michael Clarke's performance with the bat that set India an imposing target of 308 The team was in a good position to win the match, especially after the departure of Indian batting sensation Sachin Tendulkar he told newsmen in his post match comments. ''we did have a chance, though 300 was a gettable score'' Gilchrist said.

Gilchrist who was seen talking extensively to umpires Suresh Shastri and Steve Buckoner before the match was called off due to wet conditions, said it was the decision of the umpires and match referee.

He said coming after the Twenty20 World Cup debacle, the team had done remarkably well even in the absence of some senior players.

He said the Chinnaswamy Stadium wicket suited the Aussies well On the new playing conditions that had been enforced by the International Cricket Council, he said that the change of ball after 34 overs might be a contentious issue. However he commended ICC's efforts to bring in consistency in the game. On free hit for no balls, he said this should help eradicate no balls.
