Kolhapur, Sep 28 (UNI) Tension prevailed in the area of the Jawahar cooperative sugar factory, Hupari of this district today following a clash between factory workers and farmers.
At the 18th annual meeting of Jawahar sugar factory, the sugarcane growing farmers, under the banner of Swabhimani Shetakari Sanghatana (SSS), gathered in large numbers demanding second installment of Rs 380 per tonne of cane as per the agreement signed between them and the factory in November, police sources said.
There was an heated argument between the Sanghatna members and the factory authorities resulting in stone pelting on factory vehicles. In turn, the factory workers attacked the agitators.
The violence left at least ten people injured and eight vehicles damaged, the sources said.
Addressing the farmers, SSS founder president MLA Raju Shetty said the factory authorities attacked the farmers by hiring people from outside. The agitation would continue till the farmers get their due payment, he asserted.
The farmers then went on the rampage in their villages damaging furniture of the offices of Jawahar Sugar factory's located in villages of Shirol tehsil, the sources said.
However, no arrests have been made so far they added.
