Students body demands introducing Bhagat Singh's role in syllabus

Ahmedabad, Sep 28 (UNI) A students' body in Gujarat today demanded that the role of Bhagat Singh and other martyrs in the freedom struggle should be introduced in the university syllabus.

The All India Democratic Students Organisation (DSO), which made the demand,celebrated the birth centenary of Shaheed-E-Azam Bhagat Singh in the library premises of the Gujarat University here.

Floral tributes were paid to Bhagat Singh by the university staff and the students, while revolutionary songs were sung on the occasion.

Ms Pratima Sagar of Ahmedabad district organisation committee of All India DSO said that 50,000 signatures had been collected from the students and the people of Gujarat to be submitted to the Prime Minister. These signatures were collected during the Bhagat Singh Yatra throughout the state during the last one year.

The organisation has also demanded that March 23, the Martyrdom Day, should be declared as National Day; statues and memorials of martyrs be erected in all public places; postage stamp be released on the centenary celebration of Bhagat Singh; and that the liberalisation and globalisation policies be rolled back.

A memorandum was also submitted to the vice-chancellor of the university by the students demanding that a life-size statue of Bhagat Singh be installed in the university campus.
