New Delhi, Sep 28 (UNI) Prominent muslim clerics and leaders today filed a petition in the Supreme Court, seeking its direction for the implementation of the Srikrishna Commission report on the 1992 Mumbai riots so that victims get financial relief and the culprits are brought to book.

The state of Maharashtra has failed to set the law in motion by registering criminal cases against those who were found guilty by the commission, the petition said.

The petition was filed by former minister Arif Naseem Khan, Maulana Gulzar Azmi and Supreme Court lawyer Nafis Siddiqui.

The Supreme Court, in its August 1 order, had asked the Action Committee for Implementation of the Srikrishna Commission report to suggest instances where the State Task Force had failed to execute the commission's recommendations.

The petition sought action against policemen involved in the Usman Bakery case and 'Hari' Mosque incident. It said the government had not taken any punitive action against the erring policemen.

Similarly, it sought the reopening of 1250 cases of arson, loot and murder which, it alleged, were closed by the previous government without any reason.
