Jana Reddy asks police forces to curb Maoists activities

Vijayawada, Sep 27 (UNI) The Police Department should be on the alert to curb the Maoist activities in Andhra Pradesh, Home Minister K Jana Reddy said today.

Addressing a press conference here, he said though naxalism was prevalent in the state since the last 40 years, the state government had succeeded in checking it to a larger extent.

He expressed happiness over the smooth conduct of Ganesh idol immersion in Hyderabad and said in all major cities, the police had maintained law and order and communal harmony.

Mr Reddy said the government would set up a special police force in the state and about 37,880 policemen would be recruited in the next four years to combat terrorist activities.

Due to financial constrains, the government had not recruited policemen from the last three years and the cabinet would approve the department's proposal to do so now, after it is reviewed by the Chief Minister.

Mr Reddy said Tirupati, Warangal, Guntur and Rajahmundry would be converted into 'Urban Police Districts' shortly.
