HCC Wins Golden Peacock Award for Excellence in Corporate Governance

New Delhi, Sep 27 (UNI) HCC (Hindustan Construction Company Ltd), among the country's leading construction and infrastructure development companies, has won this year's coveted Golden Peacock Award for Excellence in Corporate Governance for the year 2007.

Instituted by the Institute of Directors (IOD) and the World Council for Corporate Governance, UK, the award was received by Mr V P Kulkarni, Company Secretary, HCC, at a function held in London at the 8th International Conference on Corporate Governance.

The award was conferred by Dr Ola Ullsten, former Prime Minister of Sweden.

The award winners were selected through an elaborate multi-level and transparent assessment process.

The global award jury is chaired by Dr Ola Ullsten, former Prime Minister of Sweden. Members include Justice P N Bhagwati, former Chief Justice of India, Mr Ruud Lubbers, former Prime Minister of Netherlands, and Mr Olivier Giscard d'Estaing, founder Chairman of INSEAD.

The first level assessment was carried out by a panel of international assessors under the guidance of Pradeep Chaturvedi, the chief examiner.

HCC was selected as a winner in the National Category by a jury chaired by Justice Bhagwati, who is a member of the UN Human Rights Committee.

Nearly 35 nations participated in the conference that had a very unique theme for businesses - Creating a better world through Corporate Governance.

A company official said winning the prestigious Golden Peacock award underlines the high value that HCC places on corporate governance, which leads to a competitive advantage in driving business in today's rapidly changing business world.

''The goal of improving lives is at the core of HCC's extensive Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program as well. The CSR program includes a Workplace Intervention (WPI) program for AIDS awareness, Climate Change and Global Warming awareness initiatives, and involvement in Health and Education projects for the poor and needy,'' he said.

HCC, which specialises in pioneering large-scale infrastructure development and developing new age construction technologies, is also a founding company for Disaster Resource Network Global (DRN Global), an initiative of the World Economic Forum, which helps people affected by natural calamities.

The company has managed and executed several high value projects across segments like transportation, power generation, infrastructure, marine projects, oil and gas pipeline construction, irrigation nd water supply, utilities and urban infrastructure.

Golden Peacock Awards are the holy grail of corporate excellence in quality, corporate governance, corporate social responsibility, innovation, training, environment management, occupational health and safety management, ecological leadership and business leadership.
