Tension continues for alleged occupation of Wakf land in Tripura
Agartala, Sep 26 (UNI) Tension was mounting over construction of a shopping mall in north Tripura as some local people accused the Tripura Government of occupying a Wakf land near a mosque bordering Assam.
Police today said that a section of people were agitated with the government after state labour minister Md Faizur Rahaman laid a foundation stone for the shopping mall on the disputed area.
An FIR was lodged against 18 people including an Imam for fomenting tension, damanging the foundation stone and an attempt to assault some party leaders, including the minister, on September 20.
To protest the government move, a section of people from minority community would organise a rally today at the site under the banner of Wakf Property Protection Committee, where Imams from 21 mosques would attend the meeting.
"We had given consent for the construction of the shopping mall on Wakf land on condition that an equal amount of land will be allotted to the Wakf Board but foundation stone was laid before allotting the land, which enraged the local residents,'' Abdul Khaleq, a community leader, said.
