Gujarat govt has burdened people with taxes: Congress

Ahmedabad, Sep 26 (UNI) The state government has burdened the common man with taxes over the past five years, Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee spokersperson Shaktisinh Gohil alleged today.

During 2001-02, the tax burden was Rs 9241.53 crore while during 2005-06, it rose to Rs 15,697.64 crore, Mr Gohil said in a release here today.

Land revenue taxes was Rs 86.95 crore in 2001-02 which rose to Rs 380.23 crores in 2005-06, stamp duty and registration rates rose from Rs 539.41 crore to Rs 1153.16 crore, while vehicle tax burden rose from Rs 676.63 crore to Rs 1153.97 crore, he said in the release.

Only in one sector has there been no rise in taxes and that is entertainment, Mr Gohil said. In this sector the taxes have dropped from Rs 64.80 crore to Rs 44.24 crore.

Though the state government has imposed taxes for meeting developmental works, yet the money collected has been used only for non-developmental purpose, Mr Gohil alleged.
