Man killed in firing, probitory orders promulgated

Badaun, Sep 22 (UNI) One person was killed and 10 others were wounded in firing and brickbatting between two groups over construction on a controversial piece of land in the Islamnagar area here today.

Later, prohibitory orders were promulgated in the area.

The deceased was identified as Murari Lal Sharma.

SSP Prakash D said here Irshad Khan of Islamnagar town had purchased the land four years ago in an auction by the district magistrate.

About 12 shops were already running illegally on the piece of land.

The matter went to the Allahabad High Court, which had ordered the district administration to remove illegal encroachments and hand over the land possession to Khan.

Recently, the encroachments were removed.

This morning, when Khan and his aides started construction work on the land, the illegal encroachers started pelting stones at them.

They also retaliated and in the subsequent firing and stone-pelting, a man was killed and 10 others were wounded.

Police, which rushed to the spot, had to lathicharge and fire in air to control the mob, which also set ablaze six vehicles.

One of the wounded had been referred to Bareilly in a critical condition.

Meanwhile, CrPC section 144 (prohibitory orders) had been promulgated in the town and a large contingent of PAC and police deployed to avert any unpleasant situation.
