Buddhadeb appeals to teachers to do away with private tuition

Barrackpore, Sep 22 (UNI) West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee today called upon the teachers to abjure private tuition for the interest of the society.

Addressing the 20th state conference of the Principals of West Bengal Colleges here, the Chief Minister urged the teachers to dedicate themselves to enlighten the students in every respect.

''Knowledge is the main source of power,'' he pointed out saying, ''We need all round expansion of education and increase of excellence to develop our state. Unfortunately, we are yet to make all the people of the state literate at this stage,'' he added.

Mr Bhattacharjee was critical of total commercialisation of education, and said, ''I don't subscribe to the theory that in the name of globalisation, the entire education system be commercialised. We are to consider the poor strata of our society.'' The Chief Minister told the students to learn sincerely to acquire knowledge that could help them gather power of decision making.
