Two policemen suspended for handcuffing undertrials

Sangrur, Sept 20 (UNI) Two policemen were suspended today and departmental inquiry initiated against 22 others for repeatedly handcuffing 85 undertrials in violation of the Supreme Court's ruling.

SSP Arun Pal Singh said here today that line officer Surjit Singh and reserve inspector Nahar Singh were suspended, while a departmental inquiry had been called against 22 policemen who handcuffed the 85 members of Dalit Dasta Virodhi Andolan, who were arrested on September 9 for holding a protest in Ghorrenav Lehra in Monak sub-division in the district.

The activists were being brought to the court for the case hearing today.

The SSP said that the policemen had been already warned against handcuffing the undertrials during their earlier hearing in the local court on September 17.
