New Delhi, Sep 19 (UNI) National Commission for Women will write to the Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to seek clarification on the alleged comments of the state body's chairperson on harassment of men in the state by increasing misuse of anti-dowry laws.

This was stated by NCW chairperson Girija Vyas at a press conference here.

It was earlier reported in a section of the media that State Commission for Women chairperson Namita Panda had allegedly said atrocities against men were rising on the basis of mere accusations of torture for dowry and a complaint under Section 498A of the IPC.

Ms Vyas said, ''Section 498 A was the only weapon to save women from harassment by their husbands and in-laws, before the Domestic Violence Act came in. It had helped so many women fight back such ill-treatment. Its importance should not be diluted.'' ''We shall ask the state CM to clarify these remarks and their basis,'' she added.
