Written by: Staff

New Delhi, Sep 17 (UNI) The Supreme Court today directed the Centre to file its response to a petition challenging the provisions of the Prevention of Child Marriage Act.

A bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan, Justices R B Ravindran and D K Jain issued the directions after hearing the counsel for the petitioner, who had contended that permitting the marriage of girls of 16 years of age amounted to promoting and encouraging child marriage which is not only illegal but also dangerous for society.

The directions were issued on a petition filed by National Commission for Women (NCW) and Delhi Commission for Women.
