Three buried alive in Guwahati

Guwahati, Sep 15 (UNI) Three members of a family were buried alive in a massive landslide in Noonmati area of the city in the wee hours today.

The fourth member of the family escaped with injuries after neighbours rescued him on hearing his cries for help.

Police have informed that the house of one Hemanta Sharma was buried under the mud that slid off the hill on which his house was constructed, following heavy downpour since late last night.

The accident occurred at around 0430 hours and the bodies were recovered at 0830 hours.

The 16-year-old survivor is now being treated at a nearby hospital.

State Industries and Commerce Minister Pradyut Bordoloi visited the spot and expressed sorrow at the accident. Hemanta was an employee of the district industries corporation.

Kamrup(Metro) deputy commissioner Avinash Joshi inspected the rescue operation.

Landslides in the hill areas of the city have become a regular phenomenon with the hills being encroached and houses built without following rules and stipulations.
