IGNOU ranked 17 of top 100 in web ranking of world universities

New Delhi, Sep 15 (UNI) The Indira Gandhi National Open University has been ranked 17 out of top 100 universities in the Indian subcontinent by a website.

In a survey carried out by a leading international website www.webometrics.info, IGNOU competed with institutions like IIMs, IITs, Anna University, University of Pune, Delhi University, AIIMS, BHU, Open University of Sri Lanka, Virtual University of Pakistan, North South University, University of Dhaka in Bagladesh and many others.

The universities were ranked following a mathematical formula, which took into account their web size, number of rich files, number of papers published in last years and records in the google scholar.

The web criteria included link visibility, number of citations to papers in the IST database and number of visits to the web domains.

Although the main purpose of the 'Webometrics Ranking' is to promote the publication on the web by universities and other research institutions, the web indicators produced allow a comparative analysis with other scientometric or bibliometric indicators.

The Ranking is being published since 2004 on a regular basis using the web data as indicator of the visibility and impact of the activities of the universities, colleges and research institutions worldwide.
