Sangli, Maharashtra, Sep 13 (UNI) A local court has awarded life imprisonment to a woman for murdering her own six-year-old son and two-and-half year old nephew.

Suvarna Jyotiram Chavan, a resident of Tasgaon tehsil of this district, had borrowed gold ornaments from her sister-in-law Sunita Kiran Chavan in April as she wanted to prepare similar ornaments for herself.

Suvarna, however, sold the ornaments. According to the prosecution case, a frightened Suvarna now wanted to divert Sunita's attention from the matter. She administered poison to Sunita's two-and-half year old son Pratik so that the mother would be preoccupied with the child's death and would not ask for her ornaments at this stage.

Suvarna's six-year-old son Shubham was witness to the crime committed by his mother. Therefore, Suvarna forced Shubham to consume the same poison. Both, her son and nephew, died. Suvarna fled from her house but was subsequently arrested about twelve days later.

Additional sessions judge Rajendra Jadhav convicted Suvarna and awarded her the life term. A total 15 persons stood as witnesses in this case.
