Opposition Leader criticises SEC on fixing of poll date

Bangalore, Sept 13 (UNI) Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly N Dharam Singh today objected the state Election Commission for fixing the election date for urban local bodies on September 28 as it is being a Ramazan Friday, when Muslims will be on Fast.

Mr Dharam Singh told reporters here, that Congress had convyed the matter of taking into consideration of festivals of all communities before fixing the date of Polling to facilitate the voters to take exercise their franchaise.

He said Muslims would be busy in observing the religious duties on that day and may be unable to cast their votes.

"There was a conspiracy by the coalition government to fix the date on September 28 to discourage Muslims from taking part in the voting for local bodies elections," Mr Singh alleged.

Mr Singh also criticised the government for various reasons including creating confusion in handing over power by JD (S) to BJP and its failure to release the funds of Rs 32 crore towards the fees for SC and ST professional college students.
