Five injured in police lathicharge in Panchkula

Chandigarh, Sep 12 (UNI) Five people were injured when the Haryana police resorted to lathicharge at the activists of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the BJP protesting against the Setusamudram project here today.

Haryana BJP vice-president Gian Chand Gupta, BJP's Rashtriya Kisan Morcha treasurer V K Sood and VHP leader Ishwar Jindal were among those injured in the lathicharge.

Police resorted to lathicharge when the VHP and BJP activists came on the railway track to block the movement of train at Sector 19 railway intersection and some of the protesters indulged in stone-pelting. Police also fired rubber bullets to disperse the irate demonstrators.

Superintendent of police Sandeep Khirwar said the situation was under control and nobody would be allowed to disturb the peace and harmony in the district.
