New Delhi, Sep 11 (UNI) Growing Indo-Japanese trade and investment ties and business expansion in the country is steering the growing number of inbound tourists to Chennai, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Pune, apart from the NCR region and Bangaluru, said a study.

The FICCI-ICRA Management Consulting Services (I MaCS) study pointed out that the high-spending Japanese business tourists come to NCR and Bangaluru, where manufacturing units with Japanese investments are located.

The business ties between Indian and Japan are set to surge in the wake of the recent visit of the Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, with expectations of bilateral trade doubling to 14 billion dollars by 2012.

The study suggests that future investment prospects of Japanese companies in India would expand the scope and horizon of business tourism from beyond the NCR and Bangaluru to locations such as Chennai, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Pune.

''The recent spurt of investments in building convention centers and world-class conference halls is aimed at attracting business delegations, holding of seminars and other events in India,'' the study says.

Analysing the trends in inbound Japanese tourists, the study states that while Japan is one of the most important in-bound tourist markets for India, Japanese tourists constituted a meagre 2.6 per cent of all foreign tourist arrivals in India in 2006.

The number of tourists coming in from the UK is 6.3 times higher, while those from the US is almost six times higher compared to Japan's inflow.

''Synergies in India and Japanese tourism-related activities could be achieved with improvement in infrastructure, focus on information dissemination through appropriate marketing and experience enhancement through product development measures,'' the study says.

At present, popular Indian tourism offerings for Japanese tourists are the Buddhist circuits, spread across 10 Indian states, and high-end luxury hotels and resorts.

Apart from Buddhist pilgrimage, India has other tourism offerings for the Japanese tourists such as golf courses, visit to tea plantations, beaches, heritage and culture, ayurveda and medical and adventure tourism across different locations in India.
