Mamata apprises PM of serious issues relating to WB and other states
New Delhi, Sep 11 (UNI) The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) supremo Mamata Banerjee has called on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and apprised him on some urgent issues partaining to her own state West Bengal and others.
During her meeting with the PM here last evening , Ms Banerjee narrated the plights of tea garden workers in Assam, North Bengal and Kerala.
She said the Government must send a high powered expert committee in these areas to ascertain the social as well as financial condition of the workers and the owners of tea garden in those states.
She added that based on committee's report the Government should announce a rehabilitation package as several lakh workers were engaged in this job and on account of the closure of these gardens they will die out of starvation.
Ms Banerjee also tendered her resignation as Visva Bharati Court member, which was looking into the theft of Nobel prize of Rabindra Nath Tagore as the Government has decided to close the CBI inquirty in this matter.
She urged upon the Prime Minister not to close down the inquiry as common people have apprehension that the UPA Goverment was under pressure from the ruling CPI(M) government in the state.
She also requested Dr Singh not to wind up the Centre for Management Studies at Visva Bharati University as recommended by Vice Chancellor the varsity.
She said it is a very unfortunate decision, but this prestigious management centre could be saved with the personnel intervention from the Prime Minister.
Last but not the least, Ms Banerjee also raised the issue of adequate compensation for the victims of Nandigram and Singur.
She said the compensation paid to the farmers in other parts of the country were much higher than what is being offered to the victims in West Bengal.
