Nashik, Sep 10 (UNI) As part of its nationwide agitation in protest against the proposed 'Setusamudram' project, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) will observe a 'rasta roko' agitation here on September 12.

The 'rasta roko' agitation will be staged by Shri Rameshwar Ramsetu Rakshamanch, a local body formed by the VHP for the cause, at Dwarka circle. It will be held simultaneously at other places like Peth, Harsul, Igatpuri, Sinnar and Pimpalgaon, Eknath Shetye, president (Western Region) of VHP told a news conference here today.

The agitation will be supported by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Bajrang Dal, Rashtrasevika Samiti and other organisations.

Despite various committees' reports against the destruction of the 'Ramsetu' (ancient bridge built by Lord Ram) or Adam's Bridge, the government has undertaken a project to remove the bridge in order to create a canal for an easy access to the sea.

The project was inaugurated by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh in the presence of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi on July 2, 2005.

The bridge has a place of pride and respect among Hindus as it was built by Lord Ram on his way to Lanka to save his wife Sita from the clutches of its King Ravana.

Some people feel that the destruction of the bridge could cause many problems, including threat to India's national security, damage to thorium reserves in the area, environmental damage, huge financial losses and unemployment for lakhs of fishermen. For this, the VHP was opposing the 'Setusamudram' Project undertaken by the government, Mr Shetye added and appealed citizens to join the agitation.
