New Delhi, Sep 10 (UNI) The Government today introduced the Unorganised Sector Workers' Social Security Bill, 2007 in the Rajya Sabha, providing for social security to workers in the unorganised sector, which constitutes 90 per cent of the total labour force, amid opposition by the Left parties.

Deputy Chairman K Rahman Khan asked Labour Minister Oscar Fernandes to introduce the Bill despite BJP members were shouting slogans in the well of the House, demanding a JPC to go into the Indo-US nuclear deal.

Though Left parties stiffly opposed the introduction of the Bill but their voice could not be heard amid slogan shouting by the BJP members.

CPI leader D Raja made a vain bid to explain his party's view but nothing could be heard in the din and the Chair said that the bill had been introduced.

The Bill provides for constitution of National and State level Social Security Advisory Board to recommend suitable welfare schemes for different sections of unorganised sector workers, relating to life and disability cover, health and maternity benefits, old age pension and other benefits.

Workers in the unorganised sector shall be eligible for identity card-cum-portable smart card entailing social security benefits, once they get duly registered.
