TN Govt to set up Language labs in 30 schools : Minister

Chennai, Sep 10 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu Government will set up Language Labs in 30 schools across the State with the help of Anna University to improve the learning skills of the students, School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu announced today.

He made the announcement while inaugurating a two-day national seminar on quality concerns in elementary education, organised jointly by the SRM School of Teacher Education and Research, and Directorate of Teacher Education and Research and Training (DTERT) at the SRM University campus in suburban Kattankulathur.

He said the labs would be set up at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore to improve the learning skills and the market-value of the students after completing Plus Two.

To begin with, the labs would be set up in 30 schools and they would become operational by the end of this year.

''Preliminary level talks between the Anna University and the State Government had already begun and the labs would be ready by the end of this year,'' he added.

Mr Thennarasu said the government had allotted a whopping Rs 138 crore to improve the infrastructure facilities in all the Panchayat Union Schools in the State.

An announcement to this effect was made by Local Administration Minister M K Stalin and by the end of this academic year all the Panchayat Union schools in the State would have a new look.

Stating that the revolutionary and innovative Activity Based Learning (ABL) launched in elementary schools in the State was a resounding success, Mr Thennarasu announced that it would be extended to all private schools in future.

He said the government was also in the process of introducing Activity Learning Methodology (ALM) on the lines of ABL, to the teachers of upper primary level students (standard six to eight) so that educational methods could be improved further. The scheme it would be ready by next year, he added.
