Student attempts suicide demanding Salem division

Coimbatore, Sep 10 (UNI) Tension prevailed at the Railway Station here today as a law college student attempted to immolate himself afire, demanding setting up of Salem Railway Division with jurisdiction including Coimbatore and Tirupur.

Police said Panneer Selvam came to the station, doused himself with kerosene and tried to set himself alight.

He shouted slogans, condemning the Kerala Government for putting spokes in the creation of the new division.

The auto drivers and police, who were present there, rescued him.

Later, he was arrested.

Meanwhile, about 12 college students including ones from the Government Law College commenced a fast-unto-death near Tamil Nadu Hotel at Gandhipuram in the city, demanding Salem Railway Division with jurisdiction including Coimbatore and Tirupur.

In Sulur, about 20 km from the city, 11 more students resorted to a fast-unto-death for the same issue.
