Haryana earmarks Rs 140 cr for technical education

Chandigarh, Sep 10 (UNI) Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda today said his government had earmarked a sum of Rs 140 crore for the current financial year to promote technical education in the state so that qualitative education could be imparted to the students.

The Chief Minister was speaking after laying the foundation stone of Guru Gobind Singh Polytechnic at Cheeka to be constructed at a cost of Rs 11.66 crore. The first phase of the polytechnic would be ready by July 2008.

Mr Hooda said the budget for technical education had been increased four fold in the last two years from Rs 29 crore to Rs 140 crore.

As many as 16 new private engineering colleges and ten new private polytechnics had been added in the state in the current year and seven more were likely to be accorded approval shortly.

He said during 2006-07, there were 185 institutions in the state with 32,172 intake capacity which had now increased to 238 institutions with 48,000 as intake capacity.

Mr Hooda said that the status of Chhotu Ram Engineering College Murthal had been raised to the level of Chootu Ram University of Science and Technology and a sum of Rs 75 crore would be given to this university during next three years.
