Silchar, Sep 10 (UNI) The entire Barak valley remained cut off from the rest of the country since yesterday with at least eight BSF border outposts along the 124-km international border with Bangladesh being inundated by the flood waters.

Official sources said here today that the BSF along with Army had been engaged in the rescue and relief operation in three Barak valley districts since yesterday.

The para-military forces started their rescue work in Cachar and Hailakandi districts, sources said, adding that apart from rescue operation, the Army and BSF personnel were also distributing relief materials to the flood-affected people.

The borderguards had been asked to remain standby in Karimganj district to meet any eventuality, sources said.

The flood situation worsened today as dykes of the Barak, Katakhal and Rukni had been breached in at least six places.

Dykes were breached in another more than 12 places in the past couple of days as the Barak and its tributaries continued flowing well above danger marks.

With the breach of dykes, fresh areas of the three districts had been submerged, the sources said.

Railway tracks on Silchar-Badarpur section and National Highways 53, 54 and 44, running through the valley, continued reeling under the flood water for the past two days, snapping the valley's connectivity with the rest of the country completely.

Central Water Commission sources said water level of the Barak and other major rivers was steady till afternoon but had been flowing well above danger level.

Two persons were drowned and more than six lakh people affected during the current wave of flood in the valley.
