Contractor to maintain roads for six years in Punjab

Jalandhar, Sep 10 (UNI) Punjab government has decided to engage contractor concerned for maintenance of roads also for a period of six years.

PWD Minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa, while talking to media here today said that as the normal life-span of a road was six years, the contractor, who would build the road, would be engaged to repair and maintain it for the period.

This would result in use of better quality material, he added.

He said besides Directorate of Quality Control and other offcials of the department, independent quality assurance consultants would also be hired to keep a counter-check on the material being used for road construction. For this, companies have been shortlisted after receiving bids, he added.

World Bank's Rs 1500 crore for upgradation of state roads would be spent in five years, he said adding that 23 flyovers were underconstruction in Punjab and four more were in the pipeline.

On new appointments, he said that government had requested to appoint 18 SDOs and 40 Junior Engineers.
