Unauthorised shanties near Naihati railway station demolished
Barrackpore, Sep 09 (UNI) Nearly 1,200 shanties and 56 shops were demolished and unauthorised occupiers evicted from the railway lands near Naihati railway station of Eastern Railway Sealdah division.
Railway sources said here today that authorities conducted an operation last night to evict unauthorised occupiers of railway lands while a pay loader driver was allegedly injured by the irate mob hurling stones.
The operation demolished unauthorised constructions within a stretch of nearly half a km along the Rishi Bankim Chandra Road with a view to utilise the land for a proposed development scheme taken up by the railway authorities.
Naihati Railway station had already been marked as a model station and work for reconstruction had been started, station authorities said.
Divisional Railway authorities had planned to set up rest house, car park, an auditorium among others, augmenting the required services to the commuters as well as the railway men stationed at Naihati, sources added.
However, barring a little initial resistance put up by the people occupying the railway lands and injuring of a driver, no untoward incident took place, officials said.
