Large number of political leaders attend 'teharvi' of Rakesh

Gohana, Sonepat, Sep 9 (UNI) The 'Teharvi' of Balmiki youth Rakesh alias Lara who was shot dead by three motorcycle borne armed gangsters on August 27 was observed here amid tight security.

A number of representatives from various political parties and Dalit organisations participated in the ritual. They included Deputy Speaker Lok Sabha Charanjeet singh Atwal, BJP's Ramnath Gopi, MP and Ramnath Kovin, ex MP, BSP's national general secretary Mansingh Menhera, trade union leader P P Kapur and leaders of various Dalit organisations.

It was unanimously resolved at a meeting later to continue the agitation to protest against the killing of Rakesh in a peaceful manner and to organise a dharna at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on September 14 to protest against the atrocities being committed on Dalits in Haryana.

The leaders also decided to submit a memorandum to the President of India with a demand for dismissal of the Hooda government in the state. It was also decided to institute an award of Rs 11,000 in memory of Rakesh for his courage in protecting the interests of the Dalits.

The speakers on the occasion termed Rakesh as a martyr and charged the police authorities for projecting him as a criminal without waiting for the outcome of the CBI inquiry. The speakers also left no stone unturned in lambasting Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda for his failure to protect the life and property of the Dalits in the state.

Number of speakers in the presence of the BJP representatives critisized the local BJP MP Kishan Singh Sangwan for terming Rakesh as a criminal and his murder as an incident between criminals. As a precautionary measure the administration deployed large number of police personnel along with duty magistrates to maintain law and order.
