Patna, Sep 09 (UNI) Congress today reiterated that Indo-US nuclear deal was signed in national interest and had not deviated from its commitment made in Common Minimum Programme (CMP) of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA).

All India Congress Committee general secretary and in-charge of Bihar unit Digvijay Singh told newspersons here that the nuclear deal was signed in view of the energy requirement from the nuclear sector in the country. He said that both India and France had initiated their strive for nuclear energy in early sixties.

''But even after the lapse of more than 40 years, generation of electricity from nuclear reactors in France was eighty per cent while India still lagged behind around 3 per cent,'' he added.

Mr Singh said that opposition of Left parties on the nuclear issue was not genuine as the deal was signed keeping national interest in consideration. In the same vein, China, Pakistan, BJP and the Left were opposing the nuclear deal, he alleged.

'' Congress party is not in favour of mid-term poll in the country but if Left creates such circumstances, our party is ready to face it boldly,'' he maintained.

While referring to grim flood situation in Bihar, the Congress leader also castigated the Nitish Kumar government for its failure in providing relief to flood victims.
