Gujarat Govt committed to farmers benefit: Modi

Jasdan, Gujarat, Sep 9 (UNI) Launching an attack on the Congress and its chief Sonia Gandhi without referring her name for 'injustice' meted out to Gujarat, state Chief Minister Narendra Modi said his government was always committed to work for the benefit of farmers.

Addressing a farmers convention at Market Yard here this afternoon after returning from China, Mr Modi said his government's policy was pro-farmer.

He spoke on the development of the state and mentioned the initiatives his government had taken.

The Chief Minister said Gujaratis farmers were earning more by producing BT cotton and ridiculed the UPA government for announcing that production of BT cotton was ''not legal''.

He said farmers of the state were exporting 80 per cent of their production and could earn ''dollars''.

The Chief Minister said farmers had produced 23 lakh bales of BT cotton in 2002 and this year, they produced one crore bales.

During Congress regime, farmers were unable to get power supply for their farm products, but his government wa providing 24 hour power supply in villages through the Jyoti Gram scheme, he claimed.

In a record time of 1000 days, 23 lakh electric poles were eracted and 56,000 transformers installed to provide electricity to needy farmers.
