11 honoured with Punjab and Haryana Ratan awards

Chandigarh, Sep 9 (UNI) Haryana Governor A R Kidwai today praised the gesture of the All India Conference of Intellectuals of honouring social workers, scientists, industrialists, educationists and people belonging to other fields to boost their morale and inspire others to follow in their footsteps.

Mr Kidwai conferred the Punjab and Haryana Ratan awards on 11 luminaries for their outstanding contribution in various fields.

The people, who were honoured with Punjab Ratan Award included Avinash Chandra Mahajan (CMD Allahabad Bank, Kolkata), Dr S K Salwan (VC, PTU Jalandhar), social worker Promila Chandra Mohan (Chandigarh), Dr A C Vaid (Principal, GGDSD College, Sector 32, Chandigarh), Hardev Singh Mattewal (Advocate General, Punjab), Prof S K Kulkarni (Panjab University, Chandigarh), Madhu Bahl (Chairperson, Roller Skating Chandigarh) and Maninder Kaur Maan (Director Doon International, Mohali).

The awardees from Haryana included Renu Poswal (Chairperson, Haryana Welfare Board) , scientist Vivek Verma and Rohtash Goyal (CMD, OMEX, Sonepat).

On the occasion, a seminar on ''Gender Imbalance and the Role of Intellectuals'' was also organized. The Governor pointed out that the need of the hour was to create awakening in the society especially among women to fight against female foeticide.

He said that stringent action should be taken against those indulging in this evil. He said that women were successfully performing the same duties as their counterpart, which showed that they are capable to handle any duty allotted to them.
