Students observe Gorakhpur bandh to protest ban on union polls

Gorakhpur, Sep 8 (UNI) Students today observed bandh here in protest against the order of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati banning student union elections across the state.

A mob led by students had taken to streets and burnt the effigy of the Chief Minister at several places.

The city witnessed a deserted look this morning, with all the shops remaining closed. The shutters of shops in major markets viz Golghar, Hindi Bazaar, Reti Chowk, Sahabganj, Geeta Press and Alinagar were also down.

Meanwhile, Gorakhpur's Senior Superintendent of Police R K Rai had appealed the students to maintain peace and put forward their point in a democratic way.

Police in strength have been deployed to avoid any untoward incident here.
