Gangtok, Sep 8 (UNI) One woman was killed and several houses were damaged in different parts of the state due to landslides yesterday.

A 57-year-old was killed when a landslide crushed her house at Singtam, about 25 kms from Gangtok last night. Two more houses had been damaged in the area while another declared unsafe.

Another 29 houses had been damaged in South Sikkim due to the landslides following continuous rainfall over the past few days.

People had been evacuated with relief articles. Restoration work to clear the roads had begun.

The NH-31 connecting Sikkim with West Bengal remained disconnected since yesterday, following slides at several places along the highway.

The major slide occurred yesterday at Mamkhola near Rangpo, where a portion of the highway had been washed away.

Border Roads Officials were working on a war footing to clear the slides. The highway was expected to be restored by next evening.

Meanwhile, rationing of petrol and diesel had began at Gangtok from today. Each vehicle is allowed only five litres per day from the petrol pumps under instructions from the district administration.

Although, there was no fuel crisis at the moment, the administration wanted to limit the usage of the fuels, keeping in view the highway blockade.

Light vehicles had been granted permission to ferry essential items from Siliguri.
