Pondy: HC Judge stresses on need to register marriages

Puducherry, Sep 8: Highlighting the importance of registration of marriages, Madras High Court Judge and Puducherry Legal Service Authority Executive Chairman Justice P K Misra today asked the residential associations to spread awareness on the importance of marriage registration.

Speaking at a function, organised by the Legal Service Authority and Rainbow Nagar Welfare Association here, to distribute marriage certificates, Mr Justice Misra said if a marriage was challenged in a Court of Law after several years, it would be very difficult since, the court has to depend only on evidence, if the party did not remember even the priest's name.

To avoid all these hurdles, the Supreme Court felt that there should be some law to make registration of marriages compulsory and hence the direction to all states to amend their Acts.

Unfortunately, it was not yet fully implemented and many state governments were in the process of doing so, he said.

Even if the marriages were not registered, there was a provision in the Act to register it subsequently.

He lauded the Legal Service Authority here for taking the pioneering step in this direction.

Puducherry Chief Judge Justice D Krishna Raja and Legal Service Authority Member Secretary and District Judge D Ramabathiran also adressed the gathering.
