Fake sting reporter sent to judicial custody

New Delhi, Sept 8: The reporter of a sting operation that turned out to be a fake, was sent to a week's judicial custody by a New Delhi court on Saturday.

Prakash Singh, a reporter with the Live India news channel, was detained on Friday on charges of criminal conspiracy against a lady teacher of a government school, who was allegedly shown forcing schoolgirls into prostitution in a sting operation.

After sending him to judicial custody, the court today accepted the Crime Branch's plea that sought Singh's presence in the court on Monday to bring him face to face with Uma Khurana, the sacked lady teacher.

The girl, Rashmi Singh, who had posed as a schoolgirl 'forced' into prostitution by Khurana in the sting operation, has turned out to be an aspiring journalist.

On August 30, Live India 'showed' a sting operation where it alleged that Khurana was forcing schoolgirls into prostitution.

Within minutes, angry people pelted stones at the school, and mobbed Khurana, before she was taken into police custody.

After her public humiliation, the State education department dismissed her from service.

Police now say that the case has weakened, as they have not found any incriminating evidence against Khurana.

The unedited video footage of the sting operation has further weakened the case.

The police have also taken Rashmi Singh into custody.

On Friday, taking suo moto cognisance of reports about the sting operation being a fake, the Delhi High issued notices to the Delhi Government and the Delhi Police.
