Bardhaman, Sep 8 (UNI) A local court today remanded Congress MP from Baharampore Adhir Chowdhury to 14 days' judicial custody.

Mr Chowdhury will be kept in the Baharampore jail till September 21. His lawyers are expected to appeal in a higher court.

He was arrested in connection with the murder of a Katwa CPI(M) gram panchayat member in 2003. He was earlier arrested in 2005 in the same case but subsequently released by a lower court for lack of evidence.

Earlier, the MP was brought to Katwa from Baharampore in Murshidabad district amidst tight security. He was accompanied by his wife Arpita Chowdhury and district party leaders.

Mr Chowdhury was arrested yesterday minutes after he was given bail in a double murder case.

Meanwhile, Congress activists gathered in large numbers outside the court and held demonstrations against the arrest of their leader.
