New Delhi, Sep 7 (UNI) A National Early Warning System for Tsunami and Storm Surges in Indian Ocean will become operational by the end of this month, the Lok Sabha was informed today.

An interim warning Centre has already been working at Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services, Hyderabad, on 24x7 basis, Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal said in a written answer.

He said there had been some reports of sea water ingress taking place in Tamil Nadu after the 2004 Tsunami.

Mr Sibal said a National Cyclone Risk Mitigation Project has been drawn up with a view to addressing cyclone hazard risks in 13 cyclone prone coastal states and UTs.

In this context, he pointed out that the cyclone warning is already functional and cyclone warnings are being provided by the India Meteorological Department for all the coastal regions of the country.
