Tata steel awards Rs three lakh scholarship to poor students

Kolkata, Sep 7 (UNI) Tata Steel Managing Director B Muthuraman today awarded a scholarship of Rs three lakh to 27 meritorious and deprived students in West Bengal for the second consecutive year.

Mr Muthuraman said Tata Steel had always stood for the cause of the poor and decided to provide financial aid to the deserving students from poor socio-economic background.

Out of 200 applicants, the Tata Steel Sports Club, which had taken this philanthropic initiative, had shortlisted these 27 on the basis of their performance in Secondary examination.

The TSSC with Mr Muthuraman as its patron-in-chief would give the students a monthly scholarship of Rs 300 till they complete their Higher Secondary, the club's vice-chairperson said.

The scholarship would bear the tuition fees and book expenditure of these children, whose family income ranged from Rs 1000 to 1500 per month, Mr Muthuraman added.

Congratulating the students for securing more than 95 per cent marks, the Managing Director said the students have a bright future and should be guided properly.
