SAD Councillor is Mayor of Ludhiana

Ludhiana, Sep 7 (UNI) Senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) Councillor Hakam Singh Ghayspura was today unanmiously elected Mayor of this industrial city of Punjab.

The name of Mr Hakam Singh was proposed by Harbhajan Singh (SAD) and seconded by Simranjit Singh Bains (SAD) in the first meeting of the newly elected Municipal Corporation (MC) here. The opposition Congress did not put up any candidate.

Mr Hakam Singh will be the fourth Mayor of the city.

Mr Praveen Bansal and Mrs Sumita Agarwal of the BJP, an ally of the SAD were elected Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor respectively. Their election too was unanmious.

The SAD-BJP has 37 members in the 75-member MC and the alliance also has the backing of a majority of the 18 independents. The Congress in the August eight elections was ousted from power winning just 17 seats. The BSP has two members while the CPI has one member in the MC.

Mr Shwet Malik of the BJP was yesterday elected Mayor of Amritsar MC. As per the arrangement between the two alliance partners, BJP Councillors will be the Mayors of Amritsar and Jalandhar while SAD would have its Mayors in Ludhiana and Patiala.
