Punjab Govt urges Canada to open visa centre in Amritsar

Chandigarh Sep 7 (UNI) The Punjab Government today urged the Canadian Government to open its visa centre at Amritsar as well as to start direct flight of Air Canada to the holy city.

While stating this here in a joint press conference with the members of Canadian delegation, Science and Technology Minister Bikram Singh Majithia said the centre Government had decided to open a passport office in Amritsar. So he had requested the Canadian delegation to open a visa office in Amritsar as a large number of Punjabis are settled in Canada., Responding to the demands of Mr Majithia, the members of Canadian delegation assured the Minister to take up this issue with their government.

The Minister also favoured exchange of technology between Canada and Punjab, to tackle the problem of drinking water in the pockets of the Malwa region. He told the delegation that the water in the pockets of Malwa were not fit for drinking and was the cause of cancer deaths in the region.

The Minister said Punjab was willing to enter into a science and technology agreement with Canada to facilitate exchange of scientists.

The delegation also assured to provide technological backup in the areas of renewable energy, solar energy and solid waste treatment.
