Police questions Cong MP, books INLD

Jind, Sep 7 (UNI) Sirsa Congress MP Atma Singh Gill was today in the eye of a storm after being found with two women in a room of the PWD Rest House at Narwana in this district late last yesterday.

The police rushed to the venue after it was gheraoed by hundreds of slogan-shouting people, led by local Indian National Lok Dal leaders and questioned the MP, over allegations that he was accompanied by call girls.

No case was registered against him as the MP claimed that the women accompanying him were like his ''family members'' and he had halted at the Rest House on way from Chandigarh to his home town.

Later in the evening, police registered a case against INLD former MLAs Surajbhan Kajal, Bhag Singh Chhattar and Narwana party chief Chhota Ram Belarkhan and two local advocates on charges of attacking and hurling casteist abuses at Mr Gill.

However, the incident raised a storm with the opposition INLD and BJP demanding that police register a case and arrest Mr Gill.

They also demanded resignation of the parliamentarian on moral grounds.

To press for their demands, the INLD-led opposition held protest demonstrations and blocked traffic in many places in the state including Narwana, Sirsa, Kaithal, Dabwali, Sonepat, Karnal, Jhajjar, Ratia, Tohana, Fatehabad and Mahendragarh.

In an apparent damage-control exercise, Mr Gill stoutly denied allegations of womanising and launched a counter-offensive against the INLD in a press conference held at Fatehabad.

He threatened to sue his political detractors who had tried to malign his reputation. In a press note circulated at the press meet, he alleged that the INLD president Om Parkash Chautala was inimical to him as he left his party in year 2000 due to Chautala's anti-dalit attitude.

He alleged that some 70-80 INLD activists attacked the rest house, hurled abuses on him and beat him up and maintained that the police saved his life by rescuing him and his family members from the rest house.

The note said he had sent his son Jasbir Singh to lodge an FIR against the INLD men.
