National Urban Information System scheme to cover 137 cities
New Delhi, Sep 7 (UNI) As many as 137 towns and cities will be covered under the National Urban Information System(NUIS), a scheme launched last year to set up a comprehensive information system in the local bodies for helping in planning, management and decentralised governance.
Giving this information in the Lok Sabha in a written reply, Minister of State for Urban Development Ajay Maken said his Ministry had entered into an agreement with the Survey of India for data generation under the scheme.
Expenditure on the projects will be borne by the Centre and the State in the ratio of 75:25.
Database will be created at the local body level for monitoring and management of at least relevant functions enlisted in the 12th schedule of 74th Constitutional Amendment Act, which was enacted to give more powers to local bodies.
NUIS will use modern sources such as satellite and aerial platforms to generate comprehensive three-tier GIS database for Master Plans and town planning schemes and utilities planning.
Under the scheme, there will be a programme of building capacity among town planners in the use of modern automated methods, the Minister said.
