National symposium on 'Diabetes and the Eye' in Kochi
Kochi, Sep 7 (UNI) Giridhar Eye Institute under the aegis of Kerala Society of Ophthalmic Surgeons will organise a two-day national symposium on 'Diabetes and the Eye' from tomorrow.
Talking to reporters here yesterday, Senior surgeon of the Institute Dr S J Saikumar said the symposium was important as over 30 per cent patients with history of diabetes for more than 20 years had vision-related problems due to diabetic retinopathy.
Dr Saikumar said with the high incidence of diabetes in India, there would be a sporadic increase in the number of patients having eye problems due to diabetes.
The symposium would also focus on tele-medicine to detect cases in remote rural areas where there was no access to good medicare, he said adding more than 250 delegates from across the country would deliberate on related issues at the seminar.
The speakers, include Dr Ajit Babu Mahi of L V Prasad Eye Institute in Hyderabad, Dr Rajiv Raman of Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai and Dr Dinesh Talwar from All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi.
