Mizoram witness rise in murder, rape, arm smuggling
Aizawl, Sep 07 (UNI) Mizoram has witnessed a considerable spurt in murder, arms-smuggling and rape cases compared to last year.
State DIG (Range) L S Sailo, in a meeting here today highlighted that 1,404 IPC cases were registered till August 31 this year, whereas last year it was 1,438.
However, he said there was a 19.97 per cent decrease in non-IPC cases adding that last year 58.14 per cent of the total IPC cases were registered.
Mr Sailo also claimed that they achieved 100 per cent success rate in tackling robbery cases in 2006, against the all-India level of 63 per cent.
Similarly, 78 per cent burglary cases were detected in 2006, compared to all-India's 39 per cent and 89 per cent theft cases, as against the all-India level of 41 per cent.
However, there was a whopping 118.75 per cent increase in murder cases, compared to last year's 16. While 51 per cent murder cases registered had been solved, 49 per cent were still under probe, he said.
This year, rape cases had increased by 10.87 per cent from last year while that of molestation by 34.21 per cent.
More than 33 of 51 rape cases registered this year were committed on minors, the police officials added. While 16 of the victims were below 10 years, 17 were between the 10-14 age group and six of them between 14-18 years old. However, the Child Welfare Committee sources said the actual number was much higher.
Almost 10.87 per cent increase was registered in cases under the Arms Act as compared to last year.
Many arms as well as several rounds of ammunition had been recovered from all the districts in the state during January to August this year.
Moreover, police also recovered fake currency amounting to Rs 13,16,500 during this year.
