Mayawati burnt in effigy against banning of students union polls

Varanasi, Sep 7 (UNI) The temple town this evening witnessed the wrath of students protesting the order of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati banning student union elections across the state.

A mob led by students took to the streets and burnt effigies of Ms Mayawati at several places.

The violent protests started from the Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith University. Two buses were vandalised and attempts made to ransack shops near the varsity.

The mob was later joined by some more students of Udai Pratap and Harish Chandra Degree Colleges and the MUV of a former AICC leader was damaged.

The police had to resort to a lathicharge to control the mob.
