Jamshedpur, Sep 7 (UNI) Hundreds of armed Maoist ultras swooped down on remote Digha and Chapri villages near Ghatshila in East Singhbhum district last night and gunned down two villagers.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Madhu Koda rushed to the spot this evening to take stock of the situation.

He announced Rs one lakh compensation to the family members of the deceased and also announced government service to the widows.

Earlier, Director General of Police V D Ram along with other senior officials visited the villages and ordered to deploy adequate forces along side the Jharkhand-West Bengal border to prevent further attack of the naxalites.

Former Chief Minsiter Arjun Munda and State Land Revenue Minister Dulal Bhuiyan also visited the villages.

East Singhbhum Superintendent of Police Naveen Kumar Singh, who rushed to the spot last night, said the attack was in retaliation of the arrest of three ultras from the area on Sunday last.

The naxalites sneaked into neighbouring West Bengal soon after the incident, Mr Singh added.

Mr Ram told the reporters that a combing operation was launched in the area to nab the ultras and adequate forces were being deployed in the naxalite-affected areas.

The naxalites pasted posters in the villages and asked the people to boycott the August 29 Jamshedpur Lok Sabha bypoll.

However despite the naxalite threat more than 50 per cent polling was recorded in those areas amidst tight security arrangements, official sources said.
