ADGP has not resigned, clarifies TN Govt

Chennai, Sep 7 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu Government today clarified that Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) R N Sawani has not resigned as reported in a section of the media, but only sought clearance for deputation to take up a position with the International Cricket Council (ICC) in Dubai.

In an official release here, Tamil Nadu Director General of Police P Rajendran issued the clarification and said Mr Sawani's papers had been forwarded to the centre.

''To say that Mr Sawani has put in his papers from service is incorrect,'' he said.

A distinguished IPS officer of the 1977 batch, it is learnt that Mr Sawani had been offered the position of a security expert based in Dubai by the ICC.

Mr Sawani's association with cricket goes back to his years with the CBI as a Joint Director for seven years between 1998 and 2005.

As a Special Director, he had probed the match fixing scandal, which shook the cricket world, including India.

His report to the BCCI through the CBI had led to the suspension and ban for life of some leading cricketers like former Captain Mohammed Azharuddin.

During his career, Mr Sawani was honoured with the prestigious President's Police medal. He was promoted as ADGP in 2004.

When contacted Mr Sawani, confirming the clarification by the state government that he had not put in his papers as ADGP said ''there is no confirmation yet about my position with the ICC in Dubai.'' I had asked the Deputation Commission to apply to the ICC as there was vacancy for the post, he added.

He said he was not aware when the assignment with the ICC would come through exactly.
