Nepal releases 7 lakh 32 thousand cusecs water in Kosi and Gandak

Patna, Sep 6 (UNI) The flood situation in North Bihar once again turned grim as Nepal today released 7 Lakh 35 thousand cusecs water in river Gandak and Kosi following heavy rain in the catchment areas.

According to a report from Bahga, Nepal released 4 lakh 95 thousand cusecs water from Gandak barrage inundating the low lying villages of Morwe and 12 blocks including Thakraha, Bhitharwa, Piprasi, Madhubani and others in West Champaran district.

The road communication of the flood hit villages with the district headquarters was totally snapped.

The Gandak was creating pressure at several places on the embankments and the villagers have taken shelter at safer places.

A report from Saharsa said Nepal released 2 lakh 37 thousand cusecs water from Kosi barrage following heavy downpour in its hills. The report said that 25 gates of Kosi barrage were opened today while 27 gates were opened yesterday. The engineers of water resources department were closely monitering the situation.

According to a report from Samastipur district, several villages of Moidduinagar block were inundated as water level of river Noon, Balan, Ganga and others was fast rising following heavy rainfall.

An official report said more than 2 crore population living in 11296 villages of 21 districts were flood affected. About 600 people have lost their lives in the deluge so far.

Meanwhile, central water commission sources said all most all major rivers were flowing above danger level.

The local weatherman predicted moderate to heavy rains in the catchment areas during the next 24 hours.
