Mumbai, Sep 6 (UNI) The Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IITB) will undertake a mammoth task of revising its 32,000 alumni directory, as part of its golden jubilee celebrations to encourage active participation of alumni in the upliftment and growth of the 50 year old elite campus.

Addressing media persons at the pre-launch of the year and half golden jubilee celebrations here yesterday, Prof Mishra said that the revised database of the alumni will be updated during the 18 month long celebrations, which will conclude on March 10, 2009, coinciding with the stone laying ceremony 50 years ago.

Prof Mishra said unlike the developed countries, alumni in the developing countries are yet to imbibe the culture of contribution and participation to their alma mater. As a result the IITB has devised special plans to involve the alumni expertise and contribution in the growth of the Institute.

Prof Mishra drew attention that during the celebrations, IITB will invite eminent experts, scientists and academicians to deliver special lectures. A pan-India, Vice Chancellor's conclave will also be held to brainstorm future higher education and higher technical education in the country, he added.

Dismissing queries on the dearth of faculties in the prestigious Institute, Prof Mishra said the premier school doesn't depend only on official advertisements but also recruits its academic staff from the vast alumni population, spread across the globe and particularly the United States.

He also pinpointed that during the celebrations corporate captains such as Ratan Tata, Nandan Nilekani, Mukesh Ambani, Rahul Bajaj and a host of others have agreed to be the 'Golden Jubilee Patrons' in augmenting infrastructural reforms and expansions of the elite school.

Prof D B Phatak, Convener of the golden jubilee celebrations said on October six, the Institute has invited the American astronaut of Indian origin, Sunita Williams to its campus as part of its golden jubilee itinerary.

In addition, a history book and a picture book on the evolution of IITB will also be released on March 10, 2009, said Prof Phatak.
